Fab Lab Barcelona Fab Lab Barcelona (www.fablabbcn.org) is one of the leading laboratories of worldwide network of Fab Labs (fab.cba.mit.edu), production workshops and small-scale innovation equipped with digital fabrication machines and technologies for the production of objects, tools and electronics. Fab Labs explore the relationship between digital and physical world, that began as an outreach project of the Center for Bits (cba.mit.edu) and Atoms at MIT and has become a global network of people who investigate on the popularization of a new mode of production that will affect all levels of our life: from the professional world of production design, architecture or industrial, to the domestic sphere, with the introduction of personal fabrication in our daily lives. Fab Labs are organized around a global network that connects ~ 100 laboratories, located in more than 30 countries, from South Africa to Norway or Amsterdam center to an ashram in India. Fab Labs are connected through videoconferencing and Internet, and are building one of the largest networks of knowledge and people in the world that is growing exponentially worldwide, is expected to double in the next 2 years.

Fab Lab Barcelona has the overall coordination of the Fab Academy program, a distributed platform of education for Fab Labs in which each site is a classroom and the campus is the world, where students learn about principles, applications and implications of digital fabrication technology. Fab Lab Barcelona has produced projects such as the IAAC Hyperhabitat (www.hyperhabitat.net) (official selection for the XXI Venice Biennial) or the Fab Lab House (www.fablabhouse.com) ( AUDIENCE AWARD at the first edition of the Solar Decathlon Europe in Madrid). It is currently developing projects in different scales, from smart devices to collect data from individuals (Smart Citizen) to the new production models for cities (FabCity).


Emergent trend

Two prototypes designed and produced by the Fab-Products project at FabLab Barcelona (fablabbcn.org) whose design and production instructions can be released as open code with your support. The two shoe models with their easy to assemble structure have been developed by Diego Bustamante, Sanjay Fernandes and Marcela Rozo, have been conceptualised as a process of open design and self-construction. "Assemblable Shoes" is a project chosen from the Fab-Products 2011 call to develop products in FabLab Barcelona with the support of the (IAAC) Instituto de Arquitectura Avanzada de Cataluña and ICUB, Barcelona. After a research and prototyping phase we want to finish development, produce a limited run and open up the final design through this campaign in Goteo. You can support the project and get a pair of the first models manufactured in FabLab Barcelona. At the same time, the initiative has international projection as once the design is opened anybody in the international network of FabLabs (fab.cba.mit.edu/about/labs/) will be able to make their own open source shoes.

Do you want it to have an attractive, flexible and open source design? Stop beating around the bush! The thing you want is BHOREAL. BHOREAL is an Open Source interface based on the Arduino platform that allows to control all types of software and hardware using a surface with RGB LED-backlit pushbuttons. You can use it as OSC/MIDI device to trigger samples live, as sequencer, synthesizer, rhythmbox, pitch map generator or remote control. It can also work in standalone mode as algorithmic and generative driver, mathematical simulator, game interface, low resolution LED display or any other kind of application you can imagine. Thanks to its versatility, BHOREAL is a fundamental tool for DJs, VJs, musicians, artists, hackers and all kinds of creative DIY people willing to explore a piece of hardware which is infinitely reconfigurable and reprogrammable. The BHOREAL controller allows to overcome the constraints imposed by conventional device manufacturers. Its Open Source essence makes it possible to modify and adapt the tool freely. For the last few years, MID´s team has been working on this interface in order to maximize its flexibility and provide adaptable configurations for each user needs. On the basis of these premises BHOREAL is available in four different models: two DIY self-assembly kits and two “ready-to-use” preassembled units . Both hardware and firmware are completely Open Source and are released under Creative Commons licenses. BHOREAL is Windows/Mac OS/Linux compatible.
